Delft Island is located in the middle of the Palk Strait, which separates northern Sri Lanka from southern India. Situated approximately 30 kilometers west of Jaffna city, the island spans just 8 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers at its widest point.
To reach Delft Island from Jaffna, you first need to travel to Kurikadduwan harbor, which is about an hour away.
You have two main transportation options:
- By Bus: Take bus number 776 from Jaffna bus station. The fare is LKR 90 per person, and the bus typically departs at 6:30 AM. Alternatively, you can hire a tuk-tuk for approximately LKR 2000.
- By Ferry: The ferry for Delft Island departs from Kurikadduwan harbor at either 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM. The fare is LKR 100 per person. It’s crucial to arrive at the harbor at least 30 minutes before departure, as the ferry has a maximum capacity of 100 passengers. Please note that the ferry ride may be challenging for some, as it is operated on an old vessel.
The total travel time from Jaffna to Delft Island, including the bus ride and boat transfer, is approximately 3 hours, depending on factors such as traffic and weather conditions.
